The consumer watchdog has issued an urgent recall for part of a baby monitoring unit over fire hazard concerns.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) warns the parent viewing screen unit of the Babysense MaxView video baby monitor (5.5" Split Screen Full HD 1080P) may overheat during charging.

This could result in the battery melting or sparking and poses a serious risk to consumers.

Baby monitor product recall

"The lithium-ion battery in the parent unit viewing screen may overheat during charging, which could result in the battery swelling, melting, emitting smoke, or sparking and become a fire hazard," the ACCC warns.

"[There's a] risk of serious injury, death and/or property damage from fire if the battery overheats during charging and starts a fire.

"Incidents have occurred overseas."

It only affects a specific range, with serial numbers available on the ACCC website.

The recall does not involve MaxView Pro or any other Babysense models.

Customers are advised to log their faulty product details to receive a free replacement.

And they're being warned to dispose of the product at a hazardous waste facility, not in their regular household rubbish bins or recycling.
