UK police investigate hit TV dance show drug allegations

Two unnamed stars of the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing are at the centre of allegations.

A hit British television dance show is being investigated by police over allegations of drug use.

The BBC's Strictly Come Dancing has been under scrutiny since the broadcaster launched an investigation earlier this month into claims of drug use by two unnamed stars of the show.

Overnight, London's Metropolitan Police issued a statement saying it had "received an allegation about drug related offences", BBC News reports.

"Police are assessing the information and further enquiries are taking place to establish whether there is evidence of a criminal offence being committed," it said.

Confirmation of police involvement follows a weekend report by the Sun on Sunday newspaper, which said the alleged drug use by the stars was widely discussed on the show.

The tabloid said the BBC had referred the matter to police.

A police spokesperson later confirmed that officers "received an allegation about drug related offences" last Tuesday.

The BBC said it would not comment about any police investigation.

Strictly Come Dancing features celebrities partnering with professional dancers, and has been watched by millions of viewers since it launched in 2004.
