Three charged after Melbourne dad allegedly stabbed 11 times during home invasion

A man and two teens have been charged after a Melbourne father was allegedly stabbed multiple times while trying to fight against a gang who allegedly broke into his Kew East home.

Three people have been charged after a Melbourne father was allegedly stabbed with a machete while trying to fight against a gang who broke into his home in Kew East.

Police claim the 39-year-old man's wife was forced into a separate room with their two sleeping toddlers as the group sped off in the couple's car.

Two teenage boys, aged 16 and 17, along with a 24-year-old man have all been charged with multiple offences in relation to the incident, including false imprisonment, aggravated home invasion and intentionally cause serious injury.

The "awful" incident even left senior detectives shaken.

"I've never seen anything like this, this is awful," Victoria Police's Leeanne Trusler said.

"There's nothing to indicate it being premeditated, they've just chosen this house and destroyed a family."

The gang of five arrived on Oxford Street just before 4am today.

Armed with a knife and machete, they used garden shears from the shed to smash a window.

Once inside, they forced the husband and wife into separate rooms and allegedly stabbed the 39-year-old man 11 times.

He was taken to hospital with a fractured arm, cuts to his face and will need to undergo eye surgery.

His parents, aged 69 and 70, were allegedly also cut and bruised as they tried to help.

"They're not used to people fighting back, and this home owner fought back," Trusler  said.

"It's gotta stop. This has got to stop. Someone is going to be seriously hurt. Well, someone has now been seriously hurt. It's beyond a joke."

His two kids, just two and three years old, thankfully slept through the attack.

Their 34-year-old mother was treated for minor injuries while their nanny was uninjured.

Police say four of the offenders got into the victim's BMW, while the fifth offender allegedly left in the vehicle they arrived in.

Two other men who are believed to have been involved in the incident remain on the run.

"Aggravated burglaries, that have got to one every hour across the state are now getting to the stage they are so violent that we've now seen a father stabbed with his children at home and each and every Victorian will feel that today," Victoria's Opposition Leader Brad Battin said.

The 24-year-old Caroline Springs man was remanded to appear at Melbourne Magistrates' Court in November.

The 17-year-old from the Frankston area and the 16-year-old also from the Caroline Springs area were both remanded to appear at a children's court at a later date.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has CCTV/dashcam footage or any information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report online.
