Second hiker dies in hospital after horror fall on Sunshine Coast mountain

The man fell 90 metres and suffered critical head injuries.

A second hiker who fell while climbing up Mt Beerwah in the Sunshine CoastGlasshouse Mountains has died.

The 18-year-old was with his girlfriend and her sister on the mountain on Sunday when he and his partner suddenly fell off the rockface.

His girlfriend, 18, fell 60 metres and died at the scene, while he fell 90m and was taken to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a critical condition after suffering severe head injuries.

One teenager is dead and another is fighting for life after the pair fell while hiking in the Glasshouse Mountains on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

The man has now died from his injuries.

The other teenager was uninjured, but had to be met by search and rescue teams on the mountain, and she was suffering from shock.

The mountain was closed at the time due to heavy rain recorded in the region, and it was supposed to be opened the next day.

Its closure was extended until yesterday after the tragedy.

Senior Sergeant Kylie McLellan said the incident was an awful thing to happen.

"It's an extraordinarily sad and tragic accident today," he said.

"The falls occurred as a result of some late rain that made the terrain extremely slippery."
