A barnacle-clad prosthesis has sparked an investigation.
A prosthetic leg washed up on the NSW Mid North Coast beach remains unclaimed, and police are working to track down its owner.
Jess White said she and her fiancé, Chris, came across the limb while fishing near Scotts Head on Sunday afternoon.
They found the leg about four kilometres from the 4WD access point, where the receding tide uncovered it.

"It had some barnacles on it, but being no expert, we can't say how long it's been out there."
White immediately contacted the police after finding it, then followed their advice to hand it in.
After reviewing Jess' image, David Lee Gow, Director and Principal Prosthetist at ProMotion Prosthetics, said the artificial limb resembles one designed for water-based activities.
"It appears that the prosthetic has been in the water for some time," he said.
He noted that unexpected forces, such as a large wave or a fall from a jet ski, could have caused the prosthesis to detach from the residual limb.
Gow estimated the cost of such a device to be between $11,000 and $16,000.

The unlikely find has drawn attention online.
"After speaking with the police, I posted it on the local Facebook page, and it blew up from there," White said.
Police told nine.com.au that a prosthetic leg was handed in to Nambucca Heads Police Station yesterday afternoon.
Authorities are continuing their inquiries.
