Iranian drone hits US consulate grounds in Dubai

The strike was confirmed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

An Iranian drone has hit a car park next to the US consulate in Dubai, sparking a small fire.

The strike was confirmed by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said all personnel at the consulate had been accounted for.

He told reporters at the Capitol building in Washington DC the USA had already begun pulling staff out of diplomatic facilities in the Middle East due to the threat of Iranian strikes.

"We began drawing down personnel from our diplomatic facilities in advance of this," he said.

A security alert issued on Tuesday local time said both the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the consulate had "cancelled all appointments for US visas, American Citizen Services, and notary services through at least March 4."

US government personnel in the UAE have been told to shelter in place, it added.

"Do not come to the embassy or consulate for any reason," the alert said.

In a post on X, the Dubai Media Office later announced that the fire, caused by a "drone-related incident", had been extinguished and no one had been hurt.
