Detective Inspector Craig Mansfield said officers arrived to find the man "in a distressed state" and "screaming for help".
Emergency services began CPR, however, he was declared dead shortly after.
"During early investigations, it was reported to police that the male had sustained self-inflicted injuries from a firearm... We are still investigating to see if that's correct," Mansfield said.
"Police arrived, (and) there were two other witnesses on the scene who described that the male person had shot himself.
"We are just trying to keep an open mind, any gunshot death is looked upon as a serious investigation."
"We won't be able to establish the true mechanism of that injury until the post-mortem is finalised."

Mansfield said the witnesses were known to the man who died, with all three also known by police.
One witness was arrested for unrelated drug matters, he also said.
He also said the firearm was made out of pipes.
"We believe it was a home-improvised firearm. It was believed to have a small calibre shell, it's not a 3D printed gun."
Investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the death.
Mansfield said one line of inquiry is any "relationship issues" between the two males and the female.
Granville is located in the Fraser Coast region of Queensland.
