The hero who tackled one of the Bondi shooters and disarmed him has been identified as Sydney father of two Ahmed el Ahmed.

The hero who tackled one of the Bondi shooters and disarmed him has been identified as Sydney father of two Ahmed el Ahmed.

Incredible footage captured the moment Ahmed, a fruit shop owner believed to be in his 40s, crept up to the man before running and grappling with him.

Ahmed eventually disarms him, and points the gun to get him to retreat, before dropping the weapon.

9News understands he was injured in subsequent gunfire and has undergone surgery in hospital.

Ahmed's actions have been praised in Australia and around the world, including by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Ahmed hid behind a silver vehicle and crept towards the apparent gunman before leaping towards him and putting him in a headlock.

He wrestled with the gunman until he released the weapon.

Ahmed then turned the weapon on the gunman.

The heroic man did not fire the gun but signalled for assistance.

At least 16 people have been killed and a dozen more injured after the two gunmen opened fire on the popular beach, with vision from the scene showing them shooting from a footbridge at the southern end of Campbell Parade shortly before 7pm (AEDT).

Police have confirmed more than 40 people have been injured.

One of the shooters was killed and the other was critically injured and in police custody.

Police cautioned that the bridge the shooters used may have had explosives hidden on. People were warned to keep away as it was searched.
