Charges laid, men sought over statewide alleged carpark scam

Police say two men worked together to ransack vehicles in shopping centre carparks across NSW.

Two men are before the courts as police investigate an alleged theft scam carried out in dozens of carparks across New South Wales.

Police were told two men worked together to steal from multiple elderly women inside shopping centre carparks around the state between January 3 and January 7.

One of the men would approach the victims, tell them there was an issue with their car, and ask them to raise the bonnet for an inspection.

The other man would then ransack the car for items such as wallets, purses, cash, and cards.

This alleged scam took place in locations from Newcastle to Wagga Wagga, including Sydney.

Yesterday, police attended a service station on Manning River Drive, Glenthorne, near Taree, and arrested two other men, aged 37 and 57.

Police believe the men arrived in Australia on December 28 last year, after they allegedly lied on their passenger cards and visa applications.

Today, both men will be charged with a further 17 offences, including dealing with the proceeds of crime, and making a false statement to an officer over migration.

Police are also seeking two other men, but investigators believe both men may now be overseas.
