'Balaclavas on their heads and handguns': Shooting erupts at gym

A man was "targeted" in a broad daylight shooting in Sydney's southwest.

Gunfire erupted outside a shopping centre in Sydney's south-west this morning in what police say appears to be a targeted attack towards a man outside a gym.

Police were called to the World Gym at the Home Centre on Steer Road, Gregory Hills, at about 8.35am.

Officers found a number of shots had been fired at a man outside the gym.

The intended target is believed to have left the scene immediately in a white Toyota Hilux.

There have been no reports of injuries.

Police confirmed two males were seen in the car park, carrying guns and dressed in black clothing and face coverings.

Detective Chief Inspector Gretchen Atkins confirmed police had spoken to the man targeted in the shooting, and that he was not assisting with inquiries at this time.

She said the man had an "extensive history" with police.

Customers sheltered in place after the shooting was heard, with some witnesses calling in to 2GB.

One, Lucas, claimed to have seen two men with "balaclavas on their heads and handguns" open fire with "eight or nine shots".

Another, Jack, said he had been in the Service NSW outlet in the centre when "about 10" gunshots were fired in the car park.

He said all the people in the Service NSW centre were sheltering in a back room while waiting for the all-clear by police.

Atkins praised businesses in the area for allowing people inside and securing their premises, as a number of bullets struck buildings and cars in the area.

"We are very, very fortunate no person was injured," Atkins said, pointing out how busy the carpark and centre had been at the time.

Aerial images showed police had cordoned off part of the car park.

They also appeared to be speaking to a number of witnesses in the area.

The car park was not fully closed off, with drivers continuing to move outside the cordon.
