Almost 100 soldiers injured after group photo goes wrong

The grandstand collapsed beneath their feets, causing some to fall through.

Almost 100 members of the Australian Defence Force have been injured when a grandstand collapsed whilst they were taking a group photo in North Queensland.

The 2nd Cavalry Regiment at Townsville's Lavarack Barracks was taking a routine unit photo when the floor gave way just before 2pm today.

Other Defence Force members performed first aid as paramedics were called to the base.

Almost 100 members of the Australian Defence Force have been injured while taking a group photo after a grandstand collapsed in North Queensland.

Paramedics launched a mass-casualty plan and triaged the soldiers according to their injuries.

A total of 96 members were assessed. Sixteen were taken to Townsville University Hospital for further treatment and 41 more were being taken care of at the medical centre on base.

Their injuries were not life-threatening, but there were several limb fractures and broken bones.

"All members that were were injured are currently receiving appropriate medical first aid," Lieutenant Colonel Peter Francis said.

"The area itself has been secured, and an investigation will take place to ensure that incidents like this don't happen again."

The Defence Force has contacted the families of those impacted.
