Wicked: For Good had a big opening at the box office, but its second week has set some unfortunate records when it comes to money.
What unfortunate record did Wicked: For Good set at the box office?
As spotted on Reddit’s box office page, Wicked: For Good had the 10th-worst post-Thanksgiving drop of any movie ever. On top of that, the movie also had the worst post-Thanksgiving drop of all time for a movie playing in over 2,000 theaters. In total, the movie saw a massive 72.9% drop in audiences, and while it still did make a decent amount of money (over $60 million), the movie’s drop is still a startling one.
A number of factors can explain the drop, one of which could be the sheer number of people who saw the movie during its opening weekend. However, the big drop is still a tough one for the sequel, which looked to top the high box office return set by the original film. The drop shouldn’t affect much of the franchise’s future, though, as a third film is already being talked about.
Jon M. Chu directs the sequel from a screenplay written by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox. The sequel saw the returns of Ariana Grande as Galinda “Glinda” Upland, Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba Thropp, Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero Tigelaar, Ethan Slater as Boq Woodsman, Marissa Bode as Nessarose Thropp, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. In a previous interview, Bailey teased that the “world gets heavier and more complicated” in the sequel, while also expressing his excitement for fans to see the tonal shift in the story.
Wicked: For Good is available now in theaters. The film was a massive success upon its premiere, opening to a $226 million global debut, and setting multiple records for a Broadway musical adaptation and its film release.
